Goldenberg’s path to visual arts was circuitous, having worked briefly as a geologist, this was followed by a lengthy career as a carpenter. As a woodworker he gained expertise in cabinetry and historic restoration. In 1989 Goldenberg restored the facade of the Wentworth-Gardner House, a National Historic Landmark, in Portsmouth, NH.
From 1995–1999 Roger served as adjunct painting and drawing professor at the University of New Hampshire. Subsequently, he taught a life drawing class for the former New Hampshire Institute of Art at Sanctuary Arts, Eliot, ME. Goldenberg offered a series of woodcut and monotype printmaking workshops in his Button Factory studio which became an active location for his professional development workshops, as well. In 2007, his close friend and nationally known jeweler, Paulette Werger, introduced Roger to the AVA Gallery and Arts Center in Lebanon, NH where he taught weekend workshops for a number of years. In 2016/17 Roger taught watercolor and drawing at Norwich University, in Northfield, VT. Currently Roger has resumed teaching children’s classes at the AVA Gallery and Art Center which include a Superheroes class that builds superhero self-esteem in 8-12 yr olds and watercolor classes for ages 6-8 and 9-12 yrs of age (seen in the link is a finger puppet that Roger created as an example for his students). This Spring and Summer he will be teaching youth watercolor classes. Read the descriptions here.
Roger has given back to his communities by serving on volunteer boards that include Vice President of the Portsmouth Cultural Commission and chair of its Arts (Needs) Space Committee. While on Art-Speak, Goldenberg spearheaded the formation of the Portsmouth Emerging Artist Coalition (PEAC) filling the role as its advisor. Following this two–year board position Roger joined the board of directors of the Portsmouth Music and Art Center (PMAC) and served on its Nominating Committee. Goldenberg also served treasurer on the board of directors at The Dance Hall in Kittery, ME.
Goldenberg collaborated with a New Hampshire philanthropist who donated to 26 children’s museums throughout the United States (2003–2008). It began at the Portsmouth Children’s Museum where Tom and Melinda Haas began fulfilling their wish to give many children and parents throughout the U.S. the opportunity to experience Roger’s Visual Jazz. At the completion of this collaboration, 26 paintings were donated to 25 children’s museums across our nation including the Montshire Museum of Science which has enthralled children and their parents since 1976 .
Roger received national recognition when the U.S. Small Business Administration honored him as the 2006 NH Home-Based Business Champion of the Year. This award acknowledged his dedication to serving the local creative workforce while serving on Portsmouth’s Arts and Cultural Commission. He is the recipient of numerous awards from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, including the Individual Artist Finalist Award in 1999, a Professional Development Grant in 2002, and the prestigious Artist Entrepreneurial Grant Award in years 2007, 2008, and 2012. The 2012 award was allocated to help launch statewide his visual jazz workshops and performance and “In Ears ‘n’ Eyes” with his co-conspirator, Matt Langley.
In 2014 Roger applied and was awarded representation on the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts’ prestigious Artist in Education Roster for his individual workshops and for his collaborative project In Ears ‘n’ Eyes Creativity Workshop. Roger is also a teaching artist listed in Creative Ground supported by the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA).
Roger consistently exhibits his sculpture at Sculpture Fest and was the featured artist 2011 and 2009. Sculpture Fest is an outdoor sculpture park at 509 Prosper Rd in Woodstock, VT hosted and produced by Peter and Charlet Davenport. Roger’s site-specific, kinetic sculpture “All the Colors: A Visual Jazz Suite” delighted viewers by transforming a five-acre hillside landscape with his ever-changing visual music.
