Biography

Roger Goldenberg is a New Hampshire native, born and raised in its north country. He attended the University of New Hampshire in the seventies and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. While at UNH he participated in two research expeditions to the Antarctic. Goldenberg returned to his alma mater in the late eighties to earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Goldenberg's path to the career of visual artist was circuitous, having worked briefly in geology followed by a ten year career as a woodworker. While in this field he developed expertise in historic restoration and restored the facade of the Wentwort-Gardner House, a National Historic Landmark in Portsmouth, NH.

In 1995 Roger received his MFA in painting and drawing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  From 1995–1999 he worked part-time in the University of New Hampshire art department teaching painting and drawing. Being civic minded, Goldenberg answered the call in 2002 for board member applicants for the yet to be formed Portsmouth Cultural Commission. He began his tenure in 2003, becoming the vice chair of the newly formed cultural commission Art-Speak and the chair of the Arts Space Committee.  Goldenberg also spearheaded the formation of the Portsmouth Emerging Artist Coalition (PEAC) and filled the role as chair. Currently Roger is finishing a two–year board position for the Portsmouth Music and Art Center (PMAC). While on this board he chaired vairious committees including the Nominating Committee.

Since 2003–2008 Roger Goldenberg collaborated with New Hampshire Philanthropist, Tom Haas. Mr. Haas began purchasing Goldenberg's vivacious paintings to donate to children's museums throughout the United States. It began right here in the Portsmouth Children's Museum where Haas began fulfilling his wish to give many children and parents throughout the U.S. the opportunity experience Roger's paintings. To date 26 paintings are owned by 25 children's museums across our nation.

Roger Goldenberg maintains a painting and printmaking studio at the Button Factory in Portsmouth, NH.
